What's New at Boca Raton Public Library
March is Hopping at the Library!
 
March is a busy month at the library!  Bring the kids to our annual Touch a Truck event on March 21st. This family event showcases the City’s trucks and specialty vehicles for everyone to learn about and climb on! Meet the amazing City staff who keep Boca Raton running and make our community safe and beautiful. We’ll have a sanitation truck, fire truck, sweeper truck, and many more. Watch exciting demonstrations of police motorcycles, a bulldozer, and dump truck.  Be sure to pick up a free children’s book, courtesy of the Friends of the Library, and then play in the giant sandbox.  You won’t want to miss out on all the fun!
 
Tweens can play to win our Mario Kart Tournament, and enjoy fun Mario-themed activities.
 
For adults, we’re featuring a diverse group of authors and storytellers for engaging talks, including Walter Mosley, Charles F. Rosenay and Susan Shumsky, Eliot Kleinberg, and Chetter  Galloway. Get inspiration for your next vacation with our Irish-themed Trivia Night and Travelogue to Rome. Keep reading for more events and programs happening this month!

Boca Reads: An Afternoon with Author Walter Mosley

Walter Mosley is one of the most versatile and admired writers in America – author of more than 60 critically acclaimed books that cover a wide range of ideas, genres, and forms including fiction (literary, mystery, and science fiction), political monographs, writing guides including Elements of Fiction, a memoir in paintings, and a young adult novel called 47.

Monday Movies - Documentary: The Buena Vista Social Club directed by Wim Wenders

In 1996, Ry Cooder went to Cuba, rediscovering talents of Cuba's foremost musicians and making a recording with them that sold millions and earned a Grammy Award. Cooder now returns to Cuba with filmmaker Wim Wenders to reveal the stories, personalities, and music of the performers who collaborated on that recording. Includes live performances in Amsterdam and at Carnegie Hall.

Draft to Screen

Draft to Screen is a community-led group for filmmakers, writers, animators, musicians, and artists who want to connect, grow, and find resources to finish their creative work. This group, which meets monthly, is completely free to join and open to all experience levels.
 
Led by Nabil Sealy alongside co-founder Wilandy Castelin, monthly group meetings will feature time for connection and networking, project pitching and a review of the accountability board for those working on projects, and workshops from industry professionals and accomplished creatives.

Sunday Chess Tournament Play (all ages)

Ready to take the challenge and play a more formal competitive tournament game? Ages kindergarten to adult are welcome to join the Scholastic Chess Open in partnership with 954 Chess. It's a community storytelling concert. It's a friendly competition. It's a chance to make new connections and renew old ones. Join us for the delightful cafe atmosphere, coffee and tea, and 5-7-minute true first-person stories (not read or memorized) from the audience. Maximum storytellers: 10.

Chetter Galloway combines tales of strength, courage and the wisdom of his ancestors with humorous stories from the African diaspora, rooted in cultural tradition. With music, drumming and (voluntary) audience participation, you are sure to feel the rhythm and live the stories!
 
Galloway, a Virginia native, is a graduate of the East Tennessee State University’s Master of Arts Storytelling Program, he has served as president of Kuumba Storytellers of Georgia and is president-elect of the National Association of Black Storytellers.

Poets on the Fringe (POTF)

Next Level cross stitchers will learn how to do counted cross stitch with a freehand pattern. New stitches will be presented along with details of how to read patterns and track rows. Broaden your skills in cross stitch or embroidery and learn to work from a pattern to create next level cross stitch pieces. US Citizenship Test Preparation

Do you need help preparing for the Citizenship and Interview Test? This class series offers a range of resources and services for those preparing to become a United States citizen and repeats monthly. 
 
Classes are designed to help prepare adult immigrants to successfully complete the naturalization process. This includes developing civic knowledge, learning about N-400, practice on 100 questions and the naturalization interview one-on-one preparation.

New Art Exhibit "Portals" by Artist Christine Nightingale 
March 9 - April 10
Downtown Library
Christine Nightingale is a Chilean contemporary artist and designer, currently based in South Florida. Her artwork focuses on "ancient histories, the whispers of nature, the timelessness of vintage photography, the mysteries of the esoteric and the divine." These works are bold and detailed, using vivid colors and complex techniques to depict these topics.

New Art Exhibit "Paintings by Boca Raton Artist Sandra Gorman
February 16 - March 30
Spanish River Library
Sandra Gorman works with oil, acrylics, and pastels and largely paints portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. “Painting is a passion for me,” Gorman says, “and I am on a journey discovering new materials,experimenting with mixed media, and working on large, abstract paintings.” Gorman is inspired by nature and her surroundings, alongside both well-known impressionist painters and contemporary abstract

As a former costumer in the California film industry, Ms. Libby was introduced to vintage fabrics and eventually created her own artwork by embellishing frames, boxes, and letters with various fabrics, including vintage and new jewelry. Read more

What I Do: As part of the Youth Services team, I get to assist babies all the way to teenagers and their families develop their love of books and the library. I develop plans, crafts, and teach Reading & Rhythm for 2s and 3s and large story times where you may see me in a costume.
 
Why I Love My Job: I have the freedom to be creative developing story times and decorating the Youth Services desk area for each season. Greeting smiling little faces and their families and making sure they are having an enjoyable time at the library makes my job so special. I get to be silly and have fun every day here.
