What's New at Boca Raton Public Library
June Will Be Dino-Mite at the Library!

Summer is almost upon us, so get ready to grab your shovels and "Unearth a Story at the Boca Raton Public Library!" Begin making (pre)-history with our Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on June 6 at our Spanish River location. Enjoy games, airbrush tattoos and face painting, crafts, music, dancing, snacks, and local community members!

Whether you are a total bookworm or dig an occasional good story, there is plenty of treasure buried within our shelves. With exciting programs like Big Dino Storytime, Eco Adventures: Get Prehistoric, Around-The-World Archeologist, or Stuffed Animal Sleep Over, we have plenty for you discover.

You'll be able to sign up for the Summer Reading program through Beanstack starting on June 1, running until August 2. While this program is available to all, this is an especially great program for children to avoid the "summer slide," when students lose some of their academic progress that they gained during the school year. With every 100 minutes logged, they'll be able to earn dino-tastic rewards, up to 800 minutes and 8 rewards! This will also give you an invite to our Prehistoric Pop: Bubble Party in July, only if you register. This program isn't just for children; it is available for teens and adults, where the top two readers at both locations will be able to unearth exciting rewards.

Get ready for a dino-mite time this summer—we can't wait to celebrate with you!

Monday Movies - Documentary: Rewind and Replay
directed by Alain Gomis
Monday, June 8, 5:30-8:00pm
Downtown Library
In 1969, legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk ended his European concert tour in Paris. Before the show, he appeared on a French television program to perform and answer questions in an intimate setting. Using newly discovered footage from this recording, director Alain Gomis (FÉLICITÉ) reveals the disconnect between Monk and his interviewer, Henri Renaud, whose unwittingly trivializing approach conveys the casual racism and exploitation prevalent in the music industry at large. It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary with extraordinary rarely-seen performances.

Book Talks for Adults
Book Talks - An Hour to Kill: Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner
Tuesday, June 2, 2:00-3:00pm
Downtown Library
Creation Lake is a novel about a secret agent, a young American woman, who is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to her lover, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian.  Like everyone she targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct. First, these contacts want her to incite provocation. Then they want more.

Do Admit! The Mitford Sisters and Me by Mimi Pond
Tuesday, June 16, 2:00-3:00pm
Downtown Library
Born with pedigrees but without the pocketbooks to match, the six Mitfords sisters were weaned on their family’s well-documented upper class eccentricities - all against the backdrop of a crumbling estate falling into disrepair.

The sisters grew from cloistered turn-of-the-century country girls into debutantes who would marry into political influence―for better or worse.  This charming, inventively cartooned, and lovingly researched biography captures the dramatic, over-the-top antics of high society’s strongest personalities as they rubbed elbows with some of history’s most infamous fascists and communists.

With a Master of Art in Art Education and Studio Practice from Columbia university, Ms. Veen has begun to focus on layers, specifically of paint, mixed materials, shapes, lines, and intuitive mark-making. She states that “I explore what moves me in that moment—what feels joyful, what feels tender, what irritates me, what demands attention. The work unfolds as I do.” With these ideas behind them, flora forms tend to emerge, creating dynamic, bold depictions that allow for the convergence of nature and human emotion. Read more...

Library Assistant III
What I Do: As the Library Assistant III for Youth Services, I supervise the amazing Spanish River Youth Services team, facilitate day-to-day operations, work at the desk, create and lead programs from classes like Animation with Procreate and Create-a-Comic, to English and bilingual storytimes, to bigger events like previously Bubble Party, Dog Man Day, and the Halloween Escape Room. I also create flyers, displays, decorations, and promotional videos for Summer Reading. My team and I deal with the afterschool tweens, which keeps us on our feet! I will be taking over the Parade Team, (yes, the library makes a float in the City of Boca Raton's holiday parade in December) and am a part of Team Spirit, which plans programs for library staff. I'm one of the library's cheerleaders, and I love it.

Why I Love My Job: So many reasons! I'm helping the public and directly impacting kids' lives with education and joy, sometimes as one of the first adults they've ever met; providing resources and assisting people from all walks of life; I work alongside so many amazing people at the library. I also love leading a team of amazing staff and helping them grow and create programs that they love. This job is very rewarding because we can make such a difference to so many people.
